Rider Profile: Frank Deal
This is the first in our series of rider profiles. Frank is a great first choice as a racer for the local Deschutes CX team and Race Director of GoCross.
When did you start racing? 1993, as a junior, mountain bike racing in the flatlands of Eastern Virginia.
Who has been your biggest influence in racing? So many amazing people over the last 24 years! Hard to name just one.
What is your favorite race (and why)? That’s a tough one! If I may be biased since it’s local, Deschutes Brewery’s GO Cross [in Virginia’s Blue Ridge]! Best MTB race? Tidewater Challenge… my “home” race with an incredibly fun course. For road racing, it’s a tough choice between the Carolina Crossroads Classic week in the late 2000’s and the Blue Ridge Twilight… quality fields and great courses.
What race result are you most proud of? 2008 VBW Smackdown. 3rd in the Cat 3 race. Opening VA BAR race, learned A LOT about myself in that race. A good size break got away from the field. Bridged across and dug deeper than I ever had up to that point. Ended up winning the Cat 3 BAR in 2008 with the boost in confidence from that result.
Prerace music: Agents of Good Roots, Paramore… or something completely random… usually on the drive to the race.
Go-to training ride: Can’t just give one. Bradshaw Loop for a solid 2 hours of tempo. Three Peaks if I want bang for the buck in 1:15 or less… or a Zwift KISS race if it’s a week night!
Favorite piece of Starlight gear: Road Suit without question. It’s super comfortable, fits great, feels fast and has pockets!
If you could do any race on Earth what would it be? Next season? CX Nationals in Louisville. Maybe one of those Flanders or Paris Roubaix sportives…
Goals for next season: Put the work in to be faster, stronger and smoother… while maintaining family/life balance. Continue helping GO Cross grow. Respectable showing at the Louisville CX National Championships.
